Maiduguri. Borno. Palestine. Congo. Yemen. The list goes on. So many places torn apart by unimaginable suffering, with countless lives lost or forever changed. So many atrocities unfolding before our eyes, day after day. And with it, so many fundraisers, so many people doing their best to help, each of us trying to ease the burden in some way.
So, I get it. I get why you feel overwhelmed. I understand why you feel helpless. Not knowing what foundation to donate to or what to do. The weight of it all can be crushing.
It might sound like a cliché to tell you that everything will be okay, that things will get better, but if like me, you’re a Muslim, then you understand the strength that comes from belief in the Qur’an, in Allah’s words.
Allah says:
Take a moment, pause, read that again. Let it sink in.
I always wonder how the people who endure so much suffering manage to remain so resilient and I think it’s because they believe. It’s knowledge. It’s understanding. It’s unadulterated belief. Some might say it’s because they've surrendered to their fate, but I disagree. You watch Palestinian fathers, smiling, asking their (recently) deceased children to give Salam to the Prophet ﷺ. You see flood victims who've lost everything, saying it’s not the end of the world. Subhanallah, how beautiful? They endure, they move forward, they hold on to faith.
If these people, who are living through unimaginable pain, don’t feel helpless, then we shouldn’t either. We owe it to them, and to ourselves, to keep trying. To keep raising funds, spreading awareness, donating, reposting, praying—doing whatever we can to help, no matter how small. Every act of kindness, every effort counts.
We also owe it to ourselves to step back sometimes, to breathe, to recharge. But not for too long—because the people we’re trying to help, those who are suffering, don’t have the luxury of extended breaks. Their struggle continues, day after day, and so must our efforts.
As Muslims, we have a duty—to ourselves, to others, and to Allah—to be compassionate. We have to be Muslim; compassionate, fearless and mindful.
Allah is Al Wakeel, The Disposer of Affairs, we put our trust in Him. So carry on dear reader, do not give up. You’re doing amazing even if all you can afford to do is repost.
